This would be where we would hang out for the 2 days of filming when we weren’t needed.ĭuring our waiting time, we sat around reading books, skateboarding, chatting with other extras, anything to pass the time. We were directed to a garden next to the restaurant where we could set up our lawn chairs. There wasn’t a lot of extras, only about 10-15. We showed up early in the morning, around 8am, and checked in. This scenic restaurant would be the first filming location involving extras. Sitting along the shore of the famous Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the Canal Ritz. We were asked if we could be free for 5 days, and of course we said yes! That began a weeklong adventure and my first exposure to the film industry. His sister was actually in charge of casting, and she wanted some more teenagers as extras in the film. I sent my application and sadly didn’t hear back.Ībout a week before Undercover Angel started filming, a family friend called our house. The film was looking for extras, and they were asking people to apply. In the summer of 1998, there was an article in the Ottawa Citizen announcing that a big Hollywood movie would be filming in Ottawa. That’s ok, but the movie is special to me, since I was in it! So why am I bothering to write about it? It doesn’t seem like a film many people would be searching for. However, in the end, the experience is less satisfying than it could have been.Oh, you haven’t seen the 1999 romantic comedy Undercover Angel? Don’t worry, no one has! For me, the story had a lot of potential, but the romantic aspects are obscured by other factors and the poor beginning and end prevent the story from reaching its full potential. The viewer is rooting for the father to win out, but there is no obvious reason to cheer for the mother to lose custody. It is uncomfortable to see a woman drop off her daughter with a complete stranger in the beginning and it is equally uncomfortable to see the custody battle at the end. Unfortunately, while the whole middle of the movie involves a lot of cute scenes with a lot of chemistry between the little girl and her father, the beginning and end of the movie are bit too creepy for my taste, at least in a movie of this type. The end of the movie involves a custody battle but ends up happily, at least for the girl and her father. Eventually, the guy discovers that the little girl is actually his daughter. The little girl turns out to be very precocious and wise for her age and is the catalyst for a romantic meeting between the two adults as well as the unexpected success of the guy she is staying with. At the same time, the girl befriends a woman who lives nearby. At first, the guy doesn't know what to do, but he and the girl quickly begin to bond. It is his former girlfriend who announces that she needs to drop off her daughter for two weeks while she goes on a business trip. Out of the blue, a woman appears at his door. At the beginning of the movie, we meet a struggling writer who lives alone. Unfortunately, it misses in a couple of big ways. ![]()
